Last January 18th, students from Toyo University attended a special lecture from Sumitomo Corporation Global Research Co. (SCGR) held in their headquarters in Otemachi. The students, who were taking the Special Lectures in International Business class instructed by Professor Setsuya Sato, mostly came from South East Asian Countries (i.e. Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines) and China.

The students learned about Sogo Shosha as a business model in their class. This time, through the history of Sumitomo Corporation (SC), the students learned about the evolving business model of the Sogo Shosha, as discussed by the President and CEO of SCGR, Mr. Kiyoshi Sunobe himself.

In learning about a unique and business model in Japan in a very limited time, the students first had to learn about the history and origins of the Sogo Sosha, and specifically about the foundation and the core business philosophy of SC. Then, through important past world events and crises, the students learned about how SC, and Sogo Shosha companies had to innovate and evolve their business models so as to survive and still be competitive in the market. Lastly, the students learned about the current business model of SC, and how the company innovates to create meaningful contributions in the global community.

Upon receiving fact and information kits about SC and SCGR, the students’ curiosity were further answered by Mr. Sunobe, specifically about the company’s global environment both in the workplace and in strategic planning, and in the company’s future plans. One particular characteristic of the company that stood out was on how the company provides opportunities for their employees to grow and make a difference through giving them a chance to pitch in their ideas for a new business, even if it is distant from their current business model. This in a way enables the company to innovate faster, as ideas from employees, regardless of position and background, are given importance.

This lecture was an immersive discussion especially that the students came from different countries. As international students studying in Japan, opportunities to visit and learn from big companies are still a rare occurrence, and to learn about SC and the Sogo Shosha’s evolution in the English medium proves how the company strives to innovate and be a leader in the international field.

After the lecture, the students enjoyed the majestic skyline view of Tokyo from the lecture room, and got the opportunity to see SC’s working environment through a short office tour around the floor.
